“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”
– Proverbs 27:17
The book of Proverbs, Chapter 27, is an inspirational guide compiled using short instructions for living an effective life on earth.
A piece of iron can sharpen another piece of iron, as they are similar to each other. It happens through striking, friction, and with sparks. A believer in Christ can be used to sharpen (improve and develop) another believer in Christ, as they are similar in their belief system. Though it may happen through a bit of friction and sparks, we should not be afraid of the friction that leads to godly sharpening.
A knife by itself will become blunt and less effective over time, but when sharpened with friction and sparks, it becomes a tool that can accomplish many great tasks. Like a knife, there may come times in your life when your faith starts to become blunt and you start to feel the pressures of life weighing on you. Find that prayer partner, that church group, etc, that can hit you with that necessary spark to get you back to being sharp again.
Spend more time in the company of believers, encouraging, praying, and sharing God’s word.
You may not always agree with your brothers and sisters in Christ. At times, their fellowship may entail some constructive criticism, which may feel harsh, and overwhelming, however, do not shy away from it. When you come together in His name, with intentions of love, it is that friction and those sparks that will make you sharper; smarter, wiser, and overall better today than you were yesterday.
Continue to seek the Lord. Continue to fellowship with believers. Continue to love like Jesus loved.
